Building on an earlier STAR4BBI project report (Identification of technological trends in selected value chains), the STAR4BBI report Regulatory and Standardization needs in bio-based industries (D3.2) provides an overview of the existing regulatory and standardization needs that should be overcome to support the development of a cutting-edge bioeconomy in Europe. It discusses experts’ suggestions and proposed actions.

STAR4BBI (“Developing standards for bio-based industries”) analysed these barriers and proposed actions towards overcoming these.

The STAR4BBI report Identification of technological trends in selected value chains presents the  results of an ex-ante analysis aiming to identify possible future technological developments, industry trends and innovations in selected value chains of the bio-based industries are presented. It aims at capturing the view of experts on anticipating future industry trends and innovations and identifying preliminary potential updates of the regulatory framework needed for supporting a full deployment of innovation potentials and therefore stimulating investments. CRISPR related technologies, techniques for the valorisation of lignin and furan-based chemistry resulted as the three most promising technologies/innovations and were defined by the experts as potential drivers of change for the future of the European bioeconomy.

The STAR4BBI market entry barriers report (D2.1) describes the market entry barriers due to regulation and standardisation that companies operating in the bio-based economy experience. The analysis is based on extensive interviews. Five main hurdles that were identified and are in detail discussed in the report are:

BIOPEN perspective studies

BIOPEN aims to support collaboration and knowledge sharing in the bio-based industry and to stimulate the set-up of co-innovation partnerships for the development of new products and markets in the sector by setting up an open innovation platform capable to involve industries, research centres and universities.

The BIOPEN perspective studies is a collection of perspective studies on five bio-based value chains, covering: 1) Novel bio-polymers and oligomers for plastics (PEF, PA12), rubber, adhesives, additives, surfactants and peptides for feed applications, 2) Environmentally friendly coatings and packaging materials for food, beverages and flowers to obtain prolonged preservation and consumer protection, 3) Products and applications based on lignocellulosic feedstock, mainly wood: technical timber products with enhanced construction properties and base chemicals and building blocks for the chemical industry, 4) Drop-in and functionalized bio-aromatics: greening the conventional aromatics market and offering a portfolio of new applications, 5) Micro and macro algae for the production of specialty chemicals and high end value added products for dietary supplements, cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications.

Generic bio-based product/process value chains are conceptualised and the key enablers involved are defined. Each study follows the value chain from feedstock, it comments on the technologies and emphasizes on the market features. The document identifies weak points in the route for realizing these value chains, but also points to the strengths of EU and suggests measures and strategies to expedite the development of bio-based products at commercial scale.

BIOLINX Legacy Document

BioLinX supported participants in FP7 and H2020 bioeconomy related projects in commercializing their innovative ideas and connects them to markets and regional networks.

Via its Linking & Support Programme, innovation owners were given targeted assistance. This could take the form of training, for instance in venture capital pitching, or help in drawing up a business plan. Sometimes, this meant opening a door to the right funder, either public or private. BioLinX also established connections to new potential partners and provided databases on intellectual property and online brokerage.  The BIOLINX Legacy Document aims to inform European bioeconomy clusters and projects of the analysis performed by BioLinX, so they can, to their own discretion, put BioLinXs’ efforts to use in their respective journeys in contributing towards a flourishing European bioeconomy.

This legacy document contains potential opportunities in matching selected FP7 / H2020 activities with current needs / opportunities within 12 key bioeconomy regions throughout Europe.

 

Comprehensive map of completed and ongoing programmes addressing curricula in the bio-based sector

Deliverable about the identification of educational programmes addressing curricula related to the biobased industries.

This report is the result of the study carried out by the UrBIOfuture consortium to provide a map of completed and ongoing programmes  addressing curricula that involve bio-based activities will be developed in a wide range of educational levels and covering a wide geographical scope in the EU.

Deliverable 2.1. Bio-based stakeholders completed and classified list

Establishment of a network of stakeholders in the biobased industry sector where all participant had put an input.
Main activities were dedicated to unlock the full potential of European bio-based industries, by contact with the Industry Expert Group (IEG) set-up by the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), as the main representatives of the bio-based industry among the UrBIOfuture Working Group.

Deliverable 4.1. Results from the dynamic workshop fostering dialogue organization

The present document summarises the activities developed in order to organize the UrBIOfuture Dynamic Workshop (DW), one of the key project events for fostering collaborative academia-industry dialogue, validating preliminary results, and obtaining high valued feedback from the bioeconomy experts gathered by the project.
